Since 1 February 2020, the United Kingdom has withdrawn from the European Union and has become a “third country”, with the exception of Northern Ireland which will continue to apply EU rules for another four years and have to establish its own Competent Authority.

The Withdrawal Agreement provides for a transition period ending on 31 December 2020. Until that date, EU law in its entirety applies to and in the United Kingdom.

From the 1st January 2021 the following requirements will be mandatory:

• it will be a legal requirement for all wood packaging material moving in both directions between UK and the EU to be compliant with a treatment and mark as specified in the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures n.15 (ISPM15), like any other non-EU countries
• all operators who import timber and timber products from the United Kingdom (no matter where the timber was initially harvested) are under the obligation to exercise Due Diligence according to Regulation (EU) n. 995/2010, as already in place for any procurement from non-EU countries
• FLEGT scheme no longer applies to the United Kingdom

A Recent Study of Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden (IHD) compared both wooden and plastic used pallets. Results have shown once again that wooden surfaces have an antibacterial activity 13 times higher than plastic ones. Particularly rough sections on plastic pallets  – caused by wear – represent an ideal place for the development of bacterial growth, while wood fibers do not allow micro-organisms to grow. Researchers discovered also that moulds/bacterias found on wooden surfaces can be removed permanently through proper cleaning.

Actually, wooden pallets still represent the most hygienic way to carry sensitive products like food.

Sacchi Pallets donates thirty thousand euros to Local Health Authority to fight against Coronavirus.

The donation has been announced through a video-chat between our Franco Giacomo Sacchi, Dr. Casati (Chief Officer of Latina Health Authority), and Dr. Malagola (Chief Officer of Federlazio Latina, whose President is Mr. Sacchi himself ) .

“Our family decided to make such donation so that  Latina Health Authority can better decide how to equip itself with proper means to combat COVID-19. At this moment our common challenge is to win this battle and to do so we must stand united”.

Italian Government decree issued on March 22nd 2020 regarding COVID-19 emergency stated that pallet manufacturing companies (ATECO code 16.24)  are considered strategic  industrial activities, which are not subject to limitations of any kind.

An independent research by Pennsylvania State University compared wooden and plastic pallets focusing on nine factors including: influence, global warming and carbon-footprint levels. Such indicators have been evaluated during pallets’  entire  lifecycle.

Results have confirmed once again wooden pallets to be greener than plastic ones.
